Dingoo A380 Runs Linux After All…

If you listen carefully you should be able to hear the sound of me furiously chewing away on my hat. According to outsiderjohnson and Zear on the Dingoonity forums, the new Dingoo Technologies A380 is running Linux, and they have evidence to support it.

So just for the hell of it, I downloaded Snes9x for the A320, and put it on the Dingoo and tried to run it. I renamed it snex9c.dge and placed it in plug-ins folder, and tried to run it in file browser but nothing happened.

I then renamed the original SNES emulator sfc_emu.dge to sfcold.dge2 and renamed SNEX9C to sfc_emu.dge and went into the menu system and tried to run a SNES game, the system locked up, but lo and behold I heard the music playing for the SNES game, but was still forced to look at the menu screen.

So A320 Apps APPEAR to work, they just need to be tweaked I’d suppose for the correct display.

From the quick look at the firmware files, i can say the following:

* the system A380 is running is Linux (./uImage_oob: u-boot legacy uImage, Linux-2.6.24.3L009-g84074b29-dir3710\235\23402vmlinux.bin, Linux/MIPS, OS Kernel Image (gzip), 1183771 bytes, Wed Apr  6 11:55:42 2011, Load Address: 0×80010000, Entry Point: 0x801EAF80, Header CRC: 0xF59EBB75, Data CRC: 0x652E5F56)

* the menu system is (most likely) based on dmenu. Or at least I can find dmenu config files inside

* the rootfs is filled with GPLed stuff, like emulators and applications developed for Dingux by Joyrider, Sience, Darfgarf and Slaanesh, among the others

* they didn’t even bother to change the readme or config files, I can find copies of the GPL license from the emulator directories, along with the names of our scene members involved in the porting process to DA320

Good news, no source code though.

The nice folk at isharegifts gracefully sent me a sample Dingoo A380 for review. Having declared my pecuniary interest, in truth though, after playing with this new Dingoo, bribery and graft is strictly unnecessary for its promotion.  IMHO, the product does stand on its own merits.  It remains a testament to the original A320, and its rabid, passionate community (hey, that’s us dudes) that even in 2011, some 3 years after the word “Dingoo” became somewhat a part of the English language,  that it still remains the best Dingoo-type device.  This is because it is still the best supported, thanks to Booboo’s original Dingux, and now OpenDingux.  Dingux means access to emulators and software other than those that came with the original A320’s native uCos firmware.  Dingux allows for ports of games like Doom and Duke Nukem.  Dingux is what turned the A320 from a glorified media player into the device we know and love. A somewhat new game for Dingux from ZX-81: Dingux-Mancala: A Mancala Game v1.1.0 for Dingoo/Dingux Hi All, Mancala is a board game familly, originated in East Africa. An interview with the creator of the Tauon PC-1, Volodymyr Mishin

Tauon PC-1 review

You should give this a chance. It deserves one. Welcome to the Tauon PC-1. A Tauon is an incredibly  geeky sciency thing , as it happens, and has nothing to do with the  Great Eastern Philosopher . You won't find it for sale anywhere other than on Tauon's website , and on ebay so far as I can see,  and then only if you're a regular visitor of the ebay "vintage computer hardware" category.  It won't even turn up on ebay if you search for the product name: "Tauon PC1"  - you'll just stumble upon it one day, when you're looking for a replacement floppy drive, or a C64.  So, what is it? It's a computer in a dinky little case! I’ve just come across this link , which appears to be fairly well maintained, of what appears to be all the A380 emulators and other community software, on one easy to find page!  This is a great resource – not hard to find, and sorry it’s late news – but better late than never!
